VC Day, Monday morning, 20 November
Did you know that a Tynron man, Captain Samuel Thomas Dickson Wallace (pictured), won a VC in the First World War?
Captain Wallace was actually born in Thornhill, where his father’s sisters lived, and spent the first 9 or 10 years of his life in Wallaceton, but then his family moved to the Ford,Tynron. His grandfather was Samuel Wallace of Auchenbrack, Tynron; his brother Quentin farmed at Shinnelhead, Tynron; and his parents are buried in Tynron. Among his uncles were Professor Wallace of Edinburgh University; Williamson Wallace of Lincluden, Irongray; and J.R.W. Wallace of Auchenbainzie.
In 1914 Samuel joined the Royal Field Artillery. As part of the Battle of Cambrai, lasting from 20-30 November 1917, he won his VC. His citation (London Gazette, 12 Feb 1918) states: “When the personnel of his battery was reduced to five men, had lost its commander and five of the sergeants, and was surrounded by enemy infantry, he maintained the fire of the guns by swinging the trails round close together so that his few men could continue loading and firing, thereby covering other battery positions and materially assisting some small infantry detachments to maintain a position against great odds. He was in action for 8 hours, firing the whole time and inflicting serious casualties on the enemy. Then, owing to the exhausted state of his personnel, he withdrew when infantry support arrived, taking with him the essential gun parts and all wounded men.”
This achievement will be celebrated in an event to be held on 20 November in Tynron at the War Memorial, starting at 9:45am in Tynron. It will involve a military parade, the placing of wreaths, and the unveiling of a plaque near the War Memorial by members of the Wallace family. The plaque will have electronic connection to a website detailing information about Captain Wallace. Pupils from Penpont Primary School will sing a song. The Last Post and Reveille will be sounded. After refreshments in the Hall, the scene will move to Thornhill, where a paving slab will be unveiled, at approximately 11:30am. This will also have electronic connection to the website. Similar ceremonies will be enacted, and then the procession will be driven to Moffat for the final unveiling of a plaque (at approximately 2pm) and a civic reception.”

Switching on of the Christmas Lights
Many appreciative comments have been received about this event. The organising committee consisted of George Freeborn, Hilary Osborne, Jill Burgess, Keith Lewis, Mary Newbould, Linda McDonald, Sophie Armstrong, Steve Mullane, Sue Hall and Sue King-Smith.
On Friday afternoon, Jane Blair and Jill Burgess co-ordinated the decoration of the church, helped by all the organisers as well as Madge Rorison and Margaret Irving. It looked splendid and very colourful with rowans and nasturtiums of all colours, rose-hips, bulrushes, brambles and ferns. George Freeborn had baked a wheatsheaf out of bread. Steve Mullane co-opted the panto flats (manhandling them must have been quite a feat) as boards on top of the pews and covered them with hessian to make exhibition space. It rained all day, and everybody feared for the Rorisons’ field having cars parked in it. Jo McGregor kindly made the old ‘HenHoose’ area available for parking instead.
But on Saturday the weather was fabulous. In the afternoon people filled the tables in the church with produce: jams, pickles, chutneys, cordials, bread and cakes. They also brought crafts: pictures, embroidery, cushions and wooden articles. Some were to be given away free, and some were for showing what people had been busy with over the summer (in some cases, what was available for sale: with sales to be arranged privately and on a separate occasion). Everybody was given a free raffle ticket as they came in. The Vintage Ensemble played a section of classical music while everybody admired the produce and the setting sun made the most of the beautiful stained glass in the west window.
At 5pm everybody made their way to the Hall where a barbecue was in progress. On offer were burgers made from local meat by Renwick’s (the Thornhill butchery), and sausages made by Mary Newbould. Hilary Osborne had made wonderful salads. Nearly everyone had baked an autumn crumble, and in Tynron that means there were quite a few. Meanwhile, the Vintage Ensemble played a selection of east European klezmer music. The raffle was drawn and the owner of each number was invited to choose a selection of the free produce. This threatened to take all night, as people were shy about taking more than one item. Eventually a free-for-all was declared.
It had been thought that people might like to stay and do some ceilidh dancing, but by the time the washing-up had been done we all needed to retire to bed. Donations amounted to £150, which was sent to Macmillan Cancer Care.
Grateful thanks are due to the organising committee, and especially to those good fairies who came and dismantled the church and put it to rights on the Sunday morning; to the owner for making the church available; and to everybody who came and enjoyed the event.
